Ok--so the blog is not being followed. Instead of being sad, I am happy! I know that my emails are being received by parents and youtherans, and I know that Facebook works!

So, if you are reading this message, please do the following!

1. Make sure that Sarah has your most current email address and your parent's most current email address. You can do this by emailing her.

2. If you are on Facebook, "friend" Sarah and join either TLC High School--God Squad (for 9-12th graders only) or join TLC Middle School--Sunday Nite Live! (for 6-8th graders and their parents).

Sarah will send all info out via email to any email address she has, and she will post on Facebook as well.

If you have any questions, call the church office and speak with Sarah! 949-2510. God bless!

Why be bored?

This Friday Night, we will have a High School youth only game night at the church again from 7-10 PM. Come and play games, eat food, hang out, and also join in playing the Wii. Last time, we had lots of youth here, and it was an awesome night just hanging out. Why be bored? Come here, and see your fellow youtherans! :)

If you have a guitar for Guitar Hero, bring it. If you have any Wii games that you want to play, be sure to bring them! We'll have a group trivia game again, and also a few tournaments, too.

And don't forget, we have the ping pong table now, so bring your own paddle and sign up for that tournie too! :)

Two New Events... don't miss!

Hey you don't want to miss either one!

On Wednesday, June 17th, we're going to go to Craig's Cruisers for their unlimited night--20.00 gets you in for 4 hours of unlimited play on all of their rides, games, etc. Plus, you get a food pass, too. So really 20.00 is all you need for the night!

We're gathering at the church at 4:30--taking the minibus--and returning back to church at 9:30. You can meet us at CC if you want--they don't start the unlimited night until 5 PM.
Let me know if you're coming!

On Friday, June 26th, we're having another Wii/Game/Pizza Fun Night at the church. Last time we had 17 youth crash and play Wii and eat pizza and just have a great time. We'll start that night at 7 PM, and end at 11 PM. I will rent a movie or two, too for those who just want to talk, watch movies and eat... :)

We had an awesome time last week bowling and at the movie. Glad many of you came! :)

This Friday, plan on 7 PM here at the church. We'll be in Fellowship Hall and the Youth Lounge--lots of games, food, and of course, our very first Wii night--so come hang out, bring your favorite Wii game, and just hang out.

Saturday, May 23rd EVENT!

Hey, everybody! Here I am, in Chicago! But I have the details for this weekend's High School ONLY event... If you are in town, don't stay home! Bring a friend, and join in. It all happens this Saturday, May 23rd!

First, we will meet at the church at 5:30 (we will leave at 5:45) to go to the movie, Angels & Demons. It is at Celebration Cinema North. Pete's driving the bus for those of you who need rides. If you want, you can just meet us there, too. The movie is at 6:20, and we can sit together. I haven't seen the film, but I have heard great reviews. (parents, there is a great review on Plugged Online if you are interested...) I have read the book, and think it will make great conversation.

Afterwards, we will head to the Lake Eastbrook Lanes Bowling Alley. Many of you wanted a tournament, so we will! Make your team of 6, have a team name, and the BEST team that wins will get a prize. The rest of us can still enjoy the pop and pizza. :) Following the bowling, we'll return back to the church.

I'll pay for the bowling part, but you'll need money for the movie and any snacks that you want to get while we are there. I hope to see a lot of you!!!! Especially if you are in town. Itw ill be a great night to hang out.

High School Youth Highlights…

We have a LOT going on, so keep up via Facebook and the bulletin!

· In Sunday School at 10 AM, we will be covering three new topics! On May 3rd, we will cover the history of creation in the bible. On May 10th, we will discuss the evolution vs. creationism debate (what its all about, etc). On May 17th, our last SS class, we will discuss stem cell research, medical interventions, and genetics.

· On May 23, Friday, we will have a bowling tournament/movie night out… Prizes awarded to the best team of 6, and we will also go to a cheapie movie at Woodland Cinema. Times are in the air—watch your email—but plan on it for the evening of the 23rd. Especially if you’re in town for the Memorial Weekend… way stay home? Bring a friend, sign up as a team of 6.

· On May 29, Friday, we will have our first Wii Game Night at the church from 7-10 PM. We will play games on the Wii, do Rock Band!, and other fun stuff. Pizza, other games will also be there. We have our own Wii! J How cool is that???? Bring a friend, and hang out…

· Our Youth Band Faceless will be performing June 19 at DeGage in the evening. Plan on coming to support the band, and afterwards we will do something together as a group…

I know, It's been awhile... I use Facebook now so much, but you all aren't on Facebook, so I need to get in the habit....

What's happening in the next few weeks of April/May--

First, Sunday School continues on... We will meet this Sunday, April 26th, and May 3, 10, 17th. Hope to see you there!

Second, we will be having some events coming up soon for HS Youth outside of the mission trip meetings, and stuff. So, even if you are NOT going on the mission trip, do come to the events! :)

Third, all High School youth are encouraged to give back to our church which has supported us so well... how? By service hours! This Saturday from 9-12 PM, the annual Church grounds clean up is happening. You can just show up and assist! On Saturday, May 9th, the super-duper playground set will be assembled at our church for our nursery and pre-school children! What a great way to assist our own church, and yet have some fun doing it…. If you are able to assist (and parents, you are welcome to come too!), please email mary.kovac@tlcgr.org when you think you could help out. She is looking for serious help, too, so she thinks our experienced crew of helpers would be greatly appreciated! And of course, VBS in July!

Hope you can make some time to help out the church and whatever way you can. And hope to see you soon for some of the upcoming events and Sunday School!

HS Youth Bible Study and Sunday School

Just a reminder, we will be meeting on Wednesday Nights from 6:15-7:00 PM in the youth room for our own "grace group" study during the season of Lent.

It's my plan to cover the grace group topics, and add in information about Judaism on Wednesdays and Sunday AM. Many of you have asked me to talk about Judaism, and the gospel of Mark is a perfect place to start!

Going to DeGage!

Hey, everyone!

Faceless, the youth band, will be performing at DeGage ministries this Friday night from 7-9 PM. As the youth group, we will go, support our cool band, and serve the dessert to the guests at DeGage!

This is an awesome time for us to serve our community and also to be together as a group!

Our plan is to meet at the church at 6:30--ride together in the minibus!--and be at DeGage until 9. After that, we will go to Common Grounds coffee house for coffee and smoothies and return to church at 10:30 PM! It would also be great if you could bring 1-2 items listed below for their "wish list." DeGage would use these items for their food pantry!

TONIGHT-- Bible Study! :) 6-7 PM

This Sunday, Feb. 15th, there is no Sunday School--but, Tim Flanders is leading a special class for youth and adults about his trip to Egypt this summer. Tim's got a lot of great stories to share about his ministry in Egypt. Check it out either at 9:15 or 10:00 AM in the parlor.

Friday, Feb. 20th, we are going to DeGage! Our youth band Faceless will be singing, and extra hands will be used to serve dessert to the guests. I am praying that Pete will pass the mini-bus test on Tuesday, and Pete can then drive us to DeGage in the mini-bus! Save the night--we will go out afterwards, too.

Ski Trip is still on. All day, Feb. 28th, we will be taking the mini-bus to Caberfae. Be sure you RSVP to me if you are going!!!

Mission Trip--final call. Our next meeting is March 1st. Be sure to make your commitment to going by then! We have a great group of youth going--and we want you to join us! RSVP now! :)

Seminary anyone? There is a special three week residential program at Trinity Seminary in Ohio, the last three weeks in June, that will allow current 10-12th graders to experience what seminary looks like, and what options are out there in the ministry field. If you are interested, please talk to me ASAP.

Souper Bowl Sunday, Feb. 1st

TLC High School Youth have been asked again to assist the Outreach Committee with the ELCA World Hunger Drive called Souper Bowl Sunday.

What we're to do--

Begin collecting loose change from family and friends. All loose change will be collected and distributed to local food pantries to purchase food.

Volunteer through Sarah to be a "collector" of loose change at the beginning and ending of one of the 4 services on February 1st.

Start collecting now, and let Sarah know if you can assist on the 1st of February. Thx!

Hey, everyone!

Love that snow! Yeah!

Below are a few reminders about upcoming things for HSYG. But especially the first one--which is this Friday Night!

Friday Night, we'll head downtown to Rosa Park Circle for ice skating! Yes, it finally opens this weekend! We'll meet at the Circle at 7 PM for ice skating. Cost is 1.00 per person, and rentals are free if you bring an id (from school is fine). I am planning on skating from 7-9, and afterwards heading someplace warm with food. If you need a ride, or can give a ride, be at the church at 6:30. Otherwise, we'll just meet you there.

(for some of you who read your bulletins, our original plan was to go tubing at Pando. But, Pando doesn't have tubing open on Friday night.)

Second, I have tickets still for Jars of Clay Christmas concert for Dec. 13th. This is a great concert, and afterwards we will hang out somewhere. Email me or call if you want a ticket.

Third, Mission Trip 2009--we will be gone July 11-18th! If you haven't signed up yet, and are interested let me know! This is an awesome time, and you'll be glad you made the choice to go.

hey, everyone!

we will be getting together this Friday night for fellowship and fun!

we will meet at the church at 6:30 PM--from here, we will go have pizza somewhere as a group and then to a different activity.

i called Grand Rapids parks, and they do not believe that they can have Rosa Parks open for skating. (many of you wanted to go ice skating!) but, we can do a number of different things. It will depend on how many youth we have show up.

so do come! and come with ideas. if it's too cold, I say a movie myself... but I am open to suggestions.

Two big things to plan on this Sunday!

First, come to Sunday School at 10 AM. I am bringing my calendar and I want to nail down activities for the next two months, or more, for High School. Let's plan this out. If we don't get to Buddhism on Sunday, we can do it next Sunday.

Second, for one hour (or even less) we will meet from 1:00 PM on Sunday to discuss the Mission Trip for 2009. I'll have as much info as possible--I am still waiting on quotes from the bus companies. See you there!

PS... it would be really great if you could bring your school calendars, too, so that we don't schedule something when you all are gone....

I blocked off a section at the upcoming Friday, Dec. 13th, Jars of Clay Christmas Concert with Sixpence None The Richer at 7 PM at Sunshine Community Church.

This is for High School Youth ONLY! Let's all go to the concert, and afterwards hang out somewhere...

But, you must reserve your ticket (10.00 each, but if cost is a problem, let me know, ok?) by emailing me back NOW and paying me to hold your ticket.

Hey, everyone!

Just some quick news about High School stuff for this upcoming week!

First off, Sunday School has never been better! We are meeting this Sunday at 10 AM to continue our discussion about other churches and what they believe. This week--Eastern Orthodox.

We will not have YG this Sunday--Dave is out of town, and I couldn't throw something together soon enough.

BUT--you asked for it! So I am doing it! Beginning this Wednesday, the 22nd, I will do a HS youth ONLY bible study from 6-7 PM. Dinner is provided at the church for 2.00! I mean, 2.00! So grab a meal and come to my office. You don't need to know your bible well! But if we could get a weekly group going, that talks about the bible, what it means for us today--that would be awesome! Several of you have talked to me about this. Please make a point and come!
Regarding OLD news...I did not hear from Group Workcamps, yet, about where we got in for our mission trip camp. I have a call in, as soon as I know, I will pass on the details. Make sure you watch for the email and also PLAN ON GOING! It will change your life! Talk to other youth who have gone... everyone who went last year said that they would go again... you can't get better than that!

To earn money, we will begin to sell Christmas wreaths. I'll email out order forms and info. Or, post here. :)

The Gathering for Michigan High School youth is coming faster than you know it. It's Dec. 27-30th... yes, I know it's a crazy week. They are actually GOOD!

Ok--Today's Oct. 10th! Yeah! Where did September go?A few things. Read on.

Next month, we will meet for the first time to talk about the Mission Trip 2009. I am waiting to hear from Group Workcamps where we are going. Spaces were filled and we're the "wait" for a few spots. As soon as I know dates and place, I will share... I promise! I want to know, too! Hopefully next week.

Hey, everyone

This Sunday AM at 10 AM , I will be leading a discussion on heaven and hell--what is biblical and what is fictional... hey, you picked the topic. Not me!

After that, our HS class will discuss the differences between our Lutheran faith and other world religions, and large Christian Denoms. On Sept. 21st, I will start with Mormonism.

Sunday NITE, this week, we will meet from 7-8 PM in the Youth Room--it's our large scale planning meeting. You tell us what you want to do, Dave and I will plan it. It's that simple. And yes, we're doing ski trip, mission trip, etc... but what lies between those events, we need your advice and help, ok? So, show up for the hour and have your say.

This year is gonna be so good. I am still pumped from the mission trip. God bless ya all.

What's new this week--in case you didn't read the bulletin!

Confirmands who are in 9th grade—Be sure that your service hours and faith journey paper are turned into Sarah Stobie ASAP. Our confirmation service will be Oct. 26th, 11:15. Watch your snail mail for details.

Sunday School for Middle School and High School begins on Sunday the 7th. High Schoolers will meet in the Youth Lounge (near Fellowship Hall), and the Middle Schoolers will meet upstairs in the Youth Upper Room—check it out! We really worked on the rooms this summer and make them look great!

Mentors for HS and MS Youth Groups are needed! Sarah needs A TEAM of adults to assist with HS and MS events, youth groups, and activities. Let her know if you are interested!

High School Youth Group will NOT meet Sunday, Sept. 7th. We will meet on the 14th for our first time. Also, Sarah’s hoping to get a group together this week to plan out the Fall. Talk to her soon to get involved with the planning.

Mission Trip 2008 was an awesome experience. If you missed it, wow---you missed a lot. We really had a wonderful time, making new friends, worshipping God, and helping others. Our theme was Love Out Loud! And we surely did that.

My pics are on Facebook--you'll probably need to be a friend to see them. I also put a lot in the August Messenger. Check them out, and just tell yourself that next year, you'll go, too!

Summer is finally here, and I am SO glad!

Mission Trippers leave on Saturday, July 12th in the morning and return on Saturday the 19th! Pray for us to have a safe trip to Pennsylvania! :)

On July 6th, we will be commissioning our Mission Trippers at both services. (Remember to wear your t-shirts, too!)

VBS is July 21st through 25th. If you could help out, even only one day, call me at the church office! Or, email me at sarah.stobie@tlcgr.org

I just keep forgetting to update. I send things to the bulletin, and to the messenger, and through email... it's confusing! But here we go! A real update.

THIS SUNDAY!
It's been ages since we have gotten together (but didn't you love the long Spring Break from school???)!

We will have a gathering this Sunday night at 6:30 PM in Centennial Hall. Come and hang out, catch up, have some snacks (I'll get Krispy Kremes!), and help plan our next few outings. We'll play a few games, too!

And don't forget Sunday School this week, too. We have been sharing our favorite books and music, and relating it to our beliefs.

Ok, we have heard from a few of ya... and Dave and I have made the following plans:

First, we will meet as a Group on Sunday the 20th... for those of you without exams and homework, come to church at 6:30 PM. Sarah's hired the AV guy, Brooks, to run the DVD projector on our massive screen in Centennial Hall. We'll watch a movie, have popcorn, and just chill. Movie suggestions? Blog them here--Dave's picking the movie.

Second, We will move the time of Youth Group on Sunday, Feb. 3rd to 2-4 PM. We know it's Super Bowl Sunday... and so, we'll meet here at the church and leave at 2 PM to go either bowling or lazer tag... something like that.

The high school youth group had a wonderful time rocking, dancing and worshiping with Kultess and Newsboys at the Van Andel Arena Sunday night.

We found ourselves in the seventh row on the floor, amazing seats for an amazing show!

Newworldson started the night with a set that had some funk and blues from their upcoming CD.

Kutless followed with their heavy rock that had everybody jumping. Highlights were "Hearts of the Innocent" and the head-banging "Your Touch," and they closed with two worship songs from their "Strong Tower" CD.

Newsboys burst on the stage with "Shine" and a confetti storm. We were right in the middle of it and the silver and white confetti strips covered everything!

This is Paul Coleman's first tour with the band. He has some solo CDs, too.

Newsboys played a number of songs from their "GO," including "Wherever We Go," "The Mission," and "Something Beautiful." Lead singer Peter Furler shared an important message about God's tremendous love for us and how he accepts us as we are.

Duncan Phillips' drum riser started heading up, up, up during his solo -- while Peter rose even higher with his drums on the small stage out in the audience.

Duncan topped that when his riser started to spin, then turn sideways while he was pounding away.

Newsboys debuted two new songs, and ended their set with "I Am Free," a great sing-a-long.

Some of us were able to hang around after the show for Kutless to get done with their meet-and-greet. The guys took time to pose for photos and give us autographs!

It was a great night! Thank you Sarah for making it happen!

Youth news for November and December.

Lots of things are happening, it's easy to lose track! Here are some important things you need to know for November and December.

1. Next Meeting, Nov. 18th, we have planned the concert for Newsboys and Kutless at the Van Andel. I bought the tickets for those of you who said you wanted to go. If you want to go still, and do not have a ticket, talk with me.

Kutless rocks! They'll be playing before the Newsboys. Here is their song "Sea of Faces."

2. The Mission Trip Meeting is next Sunday, Nov. 11, at 1 PM. There will not be lunch, the meeting will be roughly one hour. It will be all about our trip to Clearfield, PA in 2008 from July 12-19. I hope you all come! We only have 35 spaces (7 for adults, and 28 for youth).

3. Fund-raising began today with the Wreath Sale. For every wreath you sell, you receive $5 in your bank account for youth events.

4. Dec. 2 Youth Group will be an outing, with Advent by Candlelight being here. Watch your email for details.

5. The State-Wide ELCA Gathering will be Dec. 27-30th in Lansing,Michigan. There is a cost, that the church can help you with. This is a massive retreat of fun, fellowship, games, late nights, music, worship, and workshops with youth from all over the state, from other ELCA churches. It's not to be missed. But.... I need to know if you are thinking about coming. Please email me at sarah.stobie@tlcgr.org if you want to come.

6. Dec. 16th for Youth Group we will do a service project together. With the Faceless Band, we will form our own caroling group. It's a lot of fun, and an easy way to serve God this holiday season.

We started the perfect autumn afternoon at Klackel's Orchard near Greenville.

The petting zoo was pretty neat, with llamas, goats, turtles and bunnies.

Some of us have milked cows before -- but this is as close as the rest of us are ever going to get!

Picking apples was our next task. Some of the guys were experts at picking them, others were better at eating them.

Some of the ladies tried a new kind of make-up.

The Pumpkin Jump is for kids -- big kids!

The corn maze wasn't too difficult. The guys made it through in record time.

Everybody had fun climbing -- and jumping from -- the massive hay pyramid.

Apple trowing was off-limits. But apple launching was OK.

After the outdoors fun we headed to Boston's for pizza then went to see the latest Harry Potter movie. Thank you Sarah or planning a great day!

These concerts have been selling out, and if you want a ticket, want to sit all together, and want to pay only HALF of the ticket’s cost-9.00-you MUST RSVP by Friday, Oct. 12^th.

Kent County is having a Food Drive. Trinity and Mayflower are teaming up to organize our two churches to have the BEST drive ever! They need help from the youth to make this successful. If you can help out with passing out flyers the week of Oct. 5-12^th, please let Sarah know. Also, they need people to pick up the items on Oct. 13^th! You can make a difference this Fall for a family in Kent County!

Wiffle Balls and blind faith

I told this story at the high school youth group meeting on Sunday and thought folks who weren't there might like to hear it.

Visitors to the Bridgeport Post’s Valley Bureau probably thought the "Romeo and Juliet" poster looked like it was hanging a little too low on the back wall.

But the guys in the office knew the poster had a more important purpose than advertising some community playhouse production. It was our strike zone.

Yes, we played Wiffle Ball in the office when the coast was clear.

As you probably know, Wiffle balls are plastic baseballs with eight oblong holes on one side that allow even a Little Leaguer to break off curve balls like Bert Blyleven.

It was our civic duty to play. We were supporting a local business. On one of my first days heading to work in the bureau, I nearly pulled off the road when I saw the small factory on Bridgeport Ave. with the Wiffle Ball sign in front. The epicenter of all things Wiffle was right there in Shelton, Conn. And just down the street from our office.

And it existed in relative secrecy, too. I could never understand why signs at the city limits didn’t read, "Welcome to Shelton, home of the Wiffle Ball." That area of Connecticut is home to Sikorsky helicopters — in Stratford — and Bic pens and razors and even Subway sandwich shops — both in Milford — all of which have a higher profile, and all of which pale in importance to the Wiffle ball.

The plastic spheres were an essential part of my youth. There aren’t too many places to do more than play catch with a real baseball in suburban New York. But we could take full hacks at a Wiffle ball anywhere in our small yards without fear of injury to person or property. We played Wiffle Ball everywhere.

Since I covered Shelton planning and zoning, I immediately started plotting for any excuse to write about the factory. I eventually came up with something flimsy, placed the call and secured my invitation.

I was greeted by David Mullany, grandson of the inventor, who gave me a quick tour of the machines that pump white plastic into molds. The yellow bats and cardboard packaging were made somewhere else and shipped to Shelton.

I then dropped the burning question: What makes the balls curve?

And I couldn’t believe the answer: "We have no idea."

It was time for the creation story. Every culture has one.

David told me how his father, also named David, and his brother would play baseball with plastic practice golf balls and broomsticks in their backyard. The boys were trying to break off deuces all day, and the grandfather — he, too, was named David — was once a semi-pro pitcher and worried the boys would hurt their young arms.

So he bought a bunch of the plastic golf balls, sat down at the kitchen table with a steak knife and started cutting patterns into the balls.

For some reason, and the family doesn’t know why, the version with the eight ovals on one side easily curved. Hold a ball so the ovals are on the right, ball curves right. Ovals on the left, and you can guess what happens.

The company made a baseball-sized Wiffle ball, and if you look hard you can find softball and mini-sized balls, too.

Then it was time for some inside information. We took our office Wiffle Ball games seriously, especially when the weather warmed up and we took our competitions to the driveway across the street. I needed a strikeout pitch, and I had an audience with a master.

At that point, he bestowed upon me a private lesson on the Wiffle knuckler. And gentle reader, I pass this knowledge on to you. Hold the ball so the ovals face your palm instead of right or left. Place two of your fingertips at the base of the holes, and push off with those fingers as you release the ball. The ball should float in without spinning, and the batter will either be mesmerized by the beauty of the whole thing or flail hopelessly when he realizes too late that no curve is coming.

We got a little out of hand when our lunch-hour games started stretching well into the afternoon, and then when we started challenging the Stratford Bureau.

I think about the story of the Wiffle Ball when I ponder some of life’s big mysteries. We can’t explain why some things happen. They just do. We must remember that God is in control, not us. Accept that curves in life are coming for reasons we can’t — or aren’t meant to — understand.

And once in a while, expect a knuckleball.

Exciting retreat information

Ultra-Secret Location for High School Retreat...

When? Saturday, Oct. 20th!

We will be going someplace (NOT STAYING AT CHURCH!!!) to have a mini-retreat. I have heard from a parent that the SAT test is scheduled that AM.

If there are a lot of you taking the SAT, will you let me know? Comment here. I will alter the plans, and we can leave later in the day. No matter when we leave, we will return at 11:00 PM at TLC.

We won't be having the HS Youth Group on the 21st! So make sure you come on the 20th! Talk to you all soon!

Dave's hands and feet

I posted this on my baseball blog, but I thought some of the God Squaders might like reading it.

I was kind of kind of surprised to hear the Shea Stadium PA system blare out a heavy metal song when new Met Jeff Conine strode to the plate Sunday night. Not that we know Conine very well yet, but it just didn’t strike me as something he would select.

And since the mind wanders when the Mets are incapable of getting a hit off Dodger relievers, I wondered what it would be like if we all had to pick a theme song for when we entered the room at work, which is essentially what Conine is doing when he carries a bat into the box.

What kind of statement do you want to make?

For me, it would be an easy choice: “Hands and Feet” by Audio Adrenaline.

The band’s final CD -- "Live from Hawaii, the Farewell Concert" -- was released today. Audio A is disbanding because lead singer Mark Stuart’s already raspy voice is shot from years of touring and the members want to go out while still on top.

I had heard of the band, but not necessarily heard much of its music. But that changed Sept. 15, 2001 when Audio appeared in Grand Rapids headlining first Festival Con Dios.

“Hands and Feet” was one of the last songs played at the daylong event, and I remember Stuart stepping back and letting the crowd sing the refrain several times, then letting people sing it without the band playing.

“I want to be your hands
I want to be your feet
I’ll go where you send me
I’ll go where you send me
And I try, yeah I try
To touch the world
Like You touched my life
And I’ll find my way
To be your hands”

And as the sound of several thousand people singing this filled the air, I had one of those magic moments of clarity. I got it. I understood what we are supposed to do.

And without getting all preachy here, I understood that we are supposed to do more than just show up at church every Sunday, and then forget everything we are supposed to have learned – until the next Sunday.

I understood that we are in fact, supposed to do His work all the time, and that he might take us places that are uncomfortable and put us into challenging or even scary situations to reach the people who are not easily reached and might need to hear His message. The Lord has touched my life and made it better, and part of our job is to spread his word and do his work.

Which is not to say that I do this well. More times than I care to admit, I fail miserably – like when I wrote mean-spirited things about Derek Jeter in the since-deleted previous post.

But after that night at the concert, I’ve thought about those lyrics a lot. And I’ve tried to think about ways to do his work in uncomfortable places.

One opportunity came up the next year when my church needed someone to lead a middle school youth group and was having trouble finding someone because, well, they’re middle-schoolers.

I gave it a shot, and based the first lesson and activity around “Hands and Feet.” And there are times when working with young people is uncomfortable and scary – and unbelievably rewarding. And you’ve read about some of those adventures in this space before.

This year will be the sixth year that I’ve worked with middle- and high-school students – but not at the same church.

Churches can be messy places, especially when a lot of strong-willed people think they are all doing God’s work and sometimes their ideas contradict. And the one we were attending was getting messier – I’ll spare you the details -- and we were wondering if we should be worshiping elsewhere.

Leaving a church is a tough decision to make. We started checking out another church and it seemed like a great fit, especially with a baseball-loving pastor. But I still felt pulled in both directions. I wanted some kind of sign that we were doing the right thing.

One of the weeks we attended was the new church’s youth Sunday. You want to guess what song the kids performed? My wife said, “What kind of a sign are you waiting for, a burning bush?”

We’ve been there ever since and it’s a wonderful place. And each time I have a new group of kids I share the song with them and we talk about how we can apply it to situations we encounter every day.

I’ve meet the guys in Audio A several times since then, and each time I thought about telling them about the impact “Hands and Feet” has had on me then chickened out. They probably hear such things a lot.

But, in the unlikely event that the Mets call on me once the rosters expand this week, you’ll know what to expect as I head to the plate.

Hits from Hawk Nelson and the Whitecaps

Check out Larry in the mosh pit, rocking out to Hawk Nelson.

Baseball, Christian rock and fellowship, all in one night? Sounds like a wild time at Fifth Third Park on Tuesday.

Trinity youth group members and their families rocked out to Hawk Nelson, then watched the West Michigan Whitecaps beat up the Kane County Cougars.

Opening act The Send didn't seem to get anybody too excited, but the place started jumping when Hawk Nelson took the stage with a cover of Audio Adrenaline's "Clap Your Hands" then roared into "The One Thing I Have Left."

A handful of bold youth group members made their way to the front of the stage for some ear-ringing excitement and got an up-close look at both the band and Larry and Bob crashing the mosh pit.

Then it was the Whitecaps' turn to pump out the hits, posting three runs in the second inning and three more in the eighth. The Cougars tacked on a couple runs in the last frame, but the Caps held on for the win.

Some Trinity members also had the chance to meet Rubber Boy, who put on a frightening show by squeezing himself through a toilet seat then somehow cramming into a small box.

Been Awhile!

Hey, it's been a while since a post--probably because the Rummage Sale and then Mission Trip filled all of our time. But... Dave Murray and I will be getting together for lunch, soon, and then we'd like to call a God Squad Meeting. Lots of things to decide for this upcoming year--events to plan, and a tour of area "youth rooms" so that we can definitely update ours. Watch the blog and email for details if you want to help!

Don't forget, our next scheduled event is August 8th, 6:30 PM at my house for games and food. But, after the God Squad meets, hopefully we'll have something planned sooner!

Anyways, I am making arrangements for this Sunday's God Squad Event. Sunday, May 20th, from 3-6 PM, we are off to go bowling at Eastbrook Lanes. We will bowl two games.
